Should Villages Help Those In Need? Park Ridge, Niles, Morton Grove Differ

Morton Grove, Niles and Maine Township provide some funding and services to people who need food, counseling, senior services and similar. Park Ridge, though, depends on non-profits to direct people to resources.

In Park Ridge, a variety of social service agencies, such as the Center of Concern, provide help to people who may be disabled, seriously ill, experiencing financial hardship or needing services to get back to stability.

But in Niles, Morton Grove, Maine Township, Des Plaines and elsewhere, government provides some funding for those functions, according to the Park Ridge Herald-Advocate.

In Niles, for example, Niles Family Services is a department of village government and receives funding from the village. Headed by Seth Knobel, its full- and part-time counselors offer counseling, maintain a food pantry and assist people who have emergency needs. Its services are limited to village residents.

Niles Police Department reports often indicate that officers referred people involved in a domestic dispute or other social-related problem to Niles Family Services.

In Morton Grove, the village's Department of Family and Senior Services provides senior services, as well as working with government/community groups like the Morton Grove Commission on Aging

Park Ridge continues to wrestle with how best to offer services, the Herald-Advocate said.
