One Killed in School Bus Crash

A rollover crash involving a school bus and two vehicles at Route 173 and Kilbourne Road in Newport Township at about 8 a.m. Friday morning has left one person dead.

The bus was loaded with about three dozen kindergarten through fifth-grade students headed to Newport Elementary School, none of whom have serious injuries, reported the Chicago Tribune.

Twenty-three students were taken by another school bus to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, while 13 other children were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries, reported WGN News.

The driver of one of the vehicles involved, a Jeep Wrangler, was pronounced dead at the scene with a second victim taken to the hospital, reported the Daily Herald.

Palatine

The bizarre case where a Palatine man shot and killed a neighborhood dog he lured into his backyard with a deer carcass has come to some resolution. 

Piotr Holy, 40, pleaded guilty to Reckless Conduct, Unlawful Discharge of a Weapon and Obstructing a Peace Officer, the Chicago Tribune reports. Felony charges were dropped due to his plea. 

According to the Chicago Tribune, Holy, who lives in the 1100 block of S. Brockway Street, will pay $2,900 in restitution to the dog's owner, perform community service and pay court costs.  

The incident occurred Friday, Feb. 8, and during their investigation Palatine police found a deer carcass in Piotr's backyard. .

The dog, a German Shepherd named Willy, belonged to a 31-year-old Palatine resident who was trying to leash him at 1:45 a.m. when he got away from her.

Arlington Heights

Fire at Uptown Cafe to Close Restaurant for Weeks

A fire that occurred at Uptown Cafe, 24 E. Miner Street, on Wednesday afternoon will cause the business to be closed for at least the next couple of weeks, according to Arlington Heights police officials on the scene. 

The fire started on the roof at 1:52 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say workers were tarring the roof at the time it began, and the fire burned insulation and caused smoke to enter into the restaurant as patrons were sitting down eating. 

The Arlington Heights Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire, but there is significant water and smoke damage to the restaurant, police said. No one was injured.

Skokie

Skokie resident Alan Rubin was struck by a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Skokie Boulevard and attempting to head east on Main Street on April 2. The 56-year-old was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Now, the Skokie Police Department has charged Evanston resident Larissa Lomax, 32, with driving under the influence of drugs and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The Major Crash Assist Team (MCAT) was activated and is currently assisting the Skokie Police Department with their ongoing investigation.

Niles

Woman Charged in Therapy Dog Theft

Adina Tiran, 33, of Skokie was charged with burglary to auto in the theft of a "therapy dog."

The dog, Luigi, was used by the victim's two children. Police said that Tiran took Luigi from a parked car in the 5700 block of Touhy Avenue on Monday.

Police identified Tiran as a suspect through video and went to her home in Skokie. She was captured exiting the rear of the residence with Luigi, a 7-month-old Pomeranian in her arms. The dog, other than being renamed "Foxy," was unharmed.
