Considered one of America’s
greatest poets, Emily Dickinson was born in 1830 to a prominent Amherst, Massachusetts
family. Living most of her life in her
father’s house, Emily wrote poetry of great power, questioning the nature of
immortality and death. In spite of encouragement and opportunity, she refused
to publish more than a few poems during her lifetime. After her death in 1886,
her sister Lavinia discovered a box containing hundreds of poems. Those poems
were first published in 1890.
