Seeking Girls and Volunteers who “Can’t Wait” to be Girl Scouts

Girls in kindergarten through fifth grades who can’t wait to join Girl Scouts are invited to join the fun during the month of October as Girl Scouts of the USA launches its new “I can’t wait” membership campaign with a new video by First Lady Michelle Obama.

Area families can find more information about local events, membership and volunteer opportunities available through Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana at www.girlscoutsgcnwi.org/join.

As Honorary National President of Girl Scouts of the USA, First Lady Michelle Obama is featured in the video discussing the important role played by Girl Scout volunteers as they encourage girls to discover fun, new adventures this fall as Girl Scouts. Every First Lady of the United States has served in this post since 1917, when First Lady Edith B. Wilson became the first Honorary National President.

Mrs. Obama’s video coincides with the launch of the organization’s “I can’t wait” campaign to increase recruitment of girl members and adult volunteers while highlighting the fun, excitement, and anticipation that are part of the Girl Scout experience.

The campaign captures the fun of Girl Scouting with the theme “I can’t wait to…” and girl-friendly grassroots promotions that will reach every community nationwide. With 3.2 million Girl Scouts and 112 Girl Scout councils across the country, parents, caregivers, and volunteers are vital to the organization’s success. Approximately 84,000 girls are members of the local council, Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

“Girl Scout volunteers can be moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, or anyone else looking to help girls in their community fulfill their boundless promise,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “As a Girl Scout volunteer, you can show girls that anything is possible, and you can inspire them to dream bigger and go further than they ever even imagined.”

Girl Scout membership is $15 per year, though some program opportunities carry additional costs that are often offset by troop proceeds raised during the annual Girl Scout Cookie Program. Girls may join troops or as individual girl members who have a wide assortment of fun, exciting program opportunities available to them through the local council.

Activities range from “Mythbusting” where girls can experiment with different foods and their reactions (think pop rocks and cola and soda geysers) to helping families of the Ronald McDonald house; from a dance workshop at the Joffrey Ballet to designing their own mobile app.

Volunteers are key to providing these “adventures” for girl members, and Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana is committed to ensuring adults have flexible ways to volunteer their time to help fulfill the Girl Scout Mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
