Dogs From Cruelty Incident Up For Adoption

One has been placed in a home; two others will be available to adopt in a couple weeks, according to the rescue organization.

Three dogs taken into custody by police after are transitioning to new homes.

, and, told police, according to the report, he got into a fight with his dog because it ran out the front door, and he said, “I’m done being nice.”

A judge ordered the dogs to be surrendered to Des Plaines police animal control on June 19, and they have since been matched with a nonprofit rescue organization that specializes in small dogs, Chris’ Rescue Angels, based in Missouri.

One of the three, a one-and-a-half year old Yorkshire Terrier named Oliver, has already been placed in a new home with a family in the Chicago area, and the other two, Gizmo, a one-year-old Shih Tzu, and Teddy, the nine-year-old Lhasa Apso injured in the incident, will be offered for adoption in the next couple weeks, said Pam Toppel, board member of Chris’ Rescue Angels.

Toppel said the dogs would be evaluated for their likes and dislikes, whether they should have a home with children, and what would be the best home for them. It usually takes a couple weeks to complete the process, and list the dogs for adoption applications online.

Toppel said all three dogs were hand-shy, which could indicate one of two things.

“It could be they were never handled, and another thing it could be that they were abused by the hand,” Toppel said.

Jeff Paul, animal control officer for Des Plaines, said the department has responded to dozens of requests to adopt the dogs, and he was glad they were going to a rescue organization where they would be able to get good homes.

“To me this is a big win for the dogs,” Paul said. “They aren’t going to have to go back into that situation, so it’s a good thing.”

Adoption applications will be accepted on Chris’ Rescue Angels’ website when the dogs are available.

Chris’ Rescue Angels, founded in 2006, is a web-based nationwide rescue organization that utilizes foster homes for small dogs. To find out more about volunteering to foster dogs or adopt a dog, visit Chris’ Rescue Angels website.
