Mayor Unsure About Plane Pull

Park Ridge's mayor is worried about the potential liability from city officers participating in a Plane Pull event for Special Olympics.

Park Ridge Mayor David Schmidt is worried about the liability from the police department's annual Plane Pull, the Park Ridge Sun-Times reports. The Police Department has participated in the Plane Pull at O'Hare for the past five years to raise money for Special Olympics.

In the event, which will take place in September, teams of officers try to pull an airplane 12 feet as fast as they can. At this month's city council meeting, Schmidt said he has asked the city's staff to research whether the city could face any liability issues as a result of injuries during the Plane Pull. Although the city's officers have participated in the event in the past, Schmitt said the idea of liability from this event came up after the city had to pay out $100,000 on a worker's comp claim from the police department.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run Plane Pull will take place Sept. 21. Each team must collect $1,000 in donations to participate in the event. The department is asking for the community's help with fundraising, which goes to benefit the Special Olympics.
