Piranha Bites Off Toddler's Fingertip

The Chicago Tribune reported that an 18-month old had its fingertip bitten off by a pet piranha at a home in Maine Township.

Cook County Sheriff's police said that an 18-month-old girl had her fingertip bitten off by the family's pet piranha, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The incident occurred at the Maine Township home on Tuesday. The newspaper reported that the father was able to retrieve the fingertip by reaching into the fish tank, grabbing the piranha, and cutting it open.

The girl was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital where the fingertip was reattached, the Chicago Tribune reported, but no information was available as to whether the surgery was successful.

What kind of parent keeps a pet pirahna around a small child? It's just plain irresponsible. Parents today need to wake up & put their child's needs above the parents' wants.

A pirhana in a fishtank that a small child can have access to?!?!?!? Gee, do these nincompoops also have a pet pit bull?

To april frick; What kind of person has a pet pirhana (which eat live goldfish aka feeder fish)? The same kind who'd have a pet snake that eats live white mice (aka feeder mice).

Originally the mom thought their pet pit bull was guilty of biting the finger. Wonder if they also have a pet boa constrictor that they leave alone with the 18-month old kid?

Pet pit bull? Pit bulls are kind gentle loving pets, unfortunatly they get A bad rap from a few bad people who train them to be mean.

It is irresponsible to own a predatory fish that can cause such harm to an innocent child. To compare it to a breed of dog, i.e. pit bulls, is unfair. Any breed of dog can bite if left unsupervised with a young child. It is bad owners that make mean dogs, not the individual breed. You can't train a piranha; you can train a dog-any dog. What is even more tragic, is the fact that you can't seem to train some people. And sadly, those people can reproduce.

Certainly, this is a small bump in this child's life. I wouldn't call the parents irresponsible because the child has gotten thru 18 months without a previous incident. All it takes is one time where she witnesses someone put their hand in the tank, to get an idea (where as the parents may have assumed that since she has never done it, she would never do it) of her own. This is a wake up call to the parents to be more diligent with their curious toddler now that she is no longer helpless & immobile. If that means getting rid of dangerous pets until they can be taught to be alert for hazardous situations then they will have to do it. The baby will also need to learn respect for animals as she ages. If parents aren't willing then they may wanna consider owning beta fish & pet rocks! I applaud his willingness to take immediate action on.his child's behalf, even if the animal lost its life. Pitbull are loving & gentle, but have a higher rate of unpredicted/unprovoked attack, & a higher rate of mortality for a child victim especially with their powerful jaws & locking mechanism. Training aside, there is a gray area of information for why their natural instincts kick in that humans can't train out of Any dog. small children can look like small prey. Glad it wasn't the dog, glad that this is an accident that they can all learn & bounce back from. So sorry that they are being disqualified for parenthood, intelligence, or humanity for this one accident.

Asking me if I would like help with my groceries to my car, is okay, but making it mandatory thatRead More you follow me to my car, oh NO. Regardless of why Jewel is doing this, it is wrong. It is as if we are suspects or criminals. It is an invasion of my privacy. I don't need you following me to my car & knowing what I have in it or what kind of car I have. Did anyone stop to think this is going to add to the stress of grocery shopping. The lines are long enough & it takes forever to check out. Now take away the baggers & let them follow all the customers & what do you have - longer lines, irate customers, having to possibly hire more help which is going to drive the prices at Jewel higher. Someone has to pay for this "service". So I say if you don't think this should be, then bombard Jewel with letters or don't shop at Jewel. I think they may get the message then.
