Regional Police Report: NIU Freshman Found Dead, Bond Denied in Naperville Stabbing Deaths and More

The following is a selection of police-related items reported in area Patches recently. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

DeKalb

NIU Freshman Found Dead in Fraternity House

A 2012 Palatine High School graduate attending Northern Illinois University was pronounced dead Friday morning in his fraternity house.

. Police say there were no suspicious circumstances around the death that point to foul play, and an autopsy is scheduled for today.

Naperville

Bond Denied for Mom Accused of Stabbing Children

Prosecutors said 40-year-old Elzbieta Plackowska told her 7-year-old son Justin and 5-year-old Olivia Dworakowski to get on their knees and pray before fatally stabbing both children nearly 100 times.

The two young children pleaded for their lives as the woman killed her son first and then Olivia, stabbing them and slashing their throats, before also stabbing two dogs to death inside a townhouse in the 800 block of Quin Court in Naperville on Tuesday night, prosecutors said.

Plackowska was charged Wednesday night with two counts of first-degree murder. She appeared in DuPage County Court on Thursday morning, where Judge John Kinsella ordered that she be held without bond. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 21.

Crystal Lake

Man Charged in CVS Robbery

A Crystal Lake man arrested less than two weeks ago for firearms violations has now been linked to the September armed robbery at CVS Pharmacy in Crystal Lake.

Eric S. Sorenson, 29, of 198 Lake Ct., was arrested by Crystal Lake Police on Wednesday, and charged with one count armed robbery, a Class X felony, and one count of theft over $500, a Class 3 felony, according to a press release issued by Police Chief David Linder.

Police said Sorenson was charged with the robbery, which occurred the evening of Sept. 2, at CVS Pharmacy, 1305 Randall Rd., Crystal Lake. Armed with a semi-automatic handgun, Sorenson passed the pharmacist a note demanding three bottles of Oxycodone, police said.

Wauconda

Firefighter Charged with Child Sexual Abuse

Donald Berthiaume, 41, of the 2500 Block of Fish Hook Way in Wauconda was arrested on Oct. 31, for two counts of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Abuse.

The victim, who was under the age of 13 at the time of the offense, reported to Lakemoor Police Department that in 2005 Berthiaume had inappropriate sexual contact with her when she was a juvenile. Lakemoor Police Department requested the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division to investigate the incident.

Berthiaume is a 13 year veteran of the Wauconda Fire Department.

Des Plaines

'Elmer Fudd Bandit' Strikes Again

A serial bank robber who tried to rob a bank in Des Plaines has struck again, the FBI stated.

A TCF Bank branch located at 7342 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago was robbed Monday afternoon. The man is suspected of robbing several banks in the Chicago area in October and trying to rob the on Oct. 14.

The robbery is similar to the Oct. 14 attempted robbery in Des Plaines. In that incident, "The man approached the shift supervisor at the TCF Bank, and said, “Give me all your money or I’ll blow your head off.” He then showed the bank worker a notepad, which stated, according to police, “Give me all your money.”

On all of these occasions, the robber has worn a plaid flannel shirt, and in his most recent robberies, he has also worn a ballcap, which has led agents to refer to him as the 'Elmer Fudd Bandit,' the FBI stated.

Better question, Ian, why must people like Marigold exist? Where in Nancy's statement was there any racism, but M comes up with that word anyway.

Chuckling...
Puddinghead November 3, 2012 at 08:28 pm
To some people any criticism of this President is considered racism.
Puddinghead November 3, 2012 at 08:35 pm
Actually I am perplexed as to why the police would call a ball cap an Elmer Fudd cap when in fact Mr. Fudd wore a hunting cap with flaps on the side. Maybe it's the plaid shirt in combination with the ball cap which has beFuddled our fine FBI agents.

What factual proof do you have that President Obama has not worked against Christians?
Facts that I see are 1. Expanding abortions on his very first day in office. 2. Refusing to shutdown Planned Parenthood, even when Lila Rose videotaped them giving advice on how to give abortions to 14year old girls without parental consent. 3. Lying during the debate by saying that Planned Parenthood provides important preventative healthcare such as mammograms, when not a single Planned Parenthood facility has a single mammogram machine. 4. Forcing all employers to provide benefits and drugs that are contrary to their religious affiliation 5. Not permitting even a moment of silence in schools, SILENCE, not even prayer just the opportunity for those that wish to pray 6. Putting the country on a path to financial ruin with $4 trillion dollars of long term debt, when Christians are strictly told to maintain fiscal moderation

@"Ashley"......fanatical Christians???? Seriously, Calm Down. I find it laughable that so many women rail on the Catholic Church wanting to protect and preserve innocent life and life in general, yet have absolutely no problem w/the gov't expanding its reach into women's pants vise vie the contraception/abortion issue. Govt shouldn't have any involvement in anyone's healthcare issues. It should be handled privately. The gov't mandated funding of abortions aka the destruction of life via taxpayer earned dollars is wrong. Let's stand in the truth and acknowledge the hand each of us has had via our confiscated tax dollars in the de facto genocide of humans-mostly black babies since the fed ruled on roe v wade. As for those of you "concerned" about Christian "extremism"....it wasn't Christians who flew planes into WTC, Pentagon, attacked Fort Hood, killed Americans at the embassy in Benghazi and shot a 14 yr old Pakistani teen girl in the head for advocating education for girls. Ladies its time to focus on the real extremism, not the kind manufactured by the democrats and President Obama who treat you as if all that matters to you are your se x organs. Think-it's not illegal yet!

Gosh, you think only one person could have this opinion...how narrow-minded. I wholeheartedly agree with Nancy's comments about man's moral compass - yes, I used the GENERIC term "man" (get over it). Seriously, everyone here thinks our society has a perfect moral compass? You're kidding yourselves...and your arrogance is blinding. Having good morals would have averted these heinous crimes, could we possibly agree on that logic???
Lou November 4, 2012 at 10:05 am
To John Robinson: Prayer is personal, government does not need to allocate time for talking to a Supreme being. One can pray at anytime and as often as one needs, without a state or federal government devoting time, even a moment, for this exercise. Creating governmental sponsored "time" for silent prayer would be tantamount for our government(s) to recognize and legalize religious observance since praying requires a God. The first phrase in our First Amendment forbids this: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion. Conversely, congress cannot prohibit one from praying at any time or at any place. I am praying right now that Obama wins a second term so that government stays out of our thoughts and out of our bodies.
Just Sayin November 4, 2012 at 12:40 pm
L...Having a good moral compass is not based on religious belief systems. I know upstanding atheists and criminal christians. Your judgement is clouded by the superstitions you were raised on and continue to be guided by. No...not "everyone here thinks our society has a perfect moral compass". There is no perfect moral compass. How can you even conceive of a perfect moral compass in reference to the imperfect human psyche. Get real. BTW...the USA (common society) is one the most christian countries on this planet...and look at the mess. So much for the christian fallacy. Seriously...take a course in critical thinking soon...lest you leave this planet haven never seen clearly.

Just Sayin November 4, 2012 at 12:51 pm
McClown...Technically the time change occurred at 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Therefore to change your clocks on Saturday would mean your time would be wrong until 2 a. m. Sunday. Your advise is wrong. On Tuesday...the president will not be changing...so you will be dead wrong again. HAHAHAHAHAHA

MARIGOLD...Sorry to inform you of this...but my graduate degree is in Religious Studies. I have probably read and studied the bible far more than you. Your comments are fanatical and ignorant. Soon you too will be gone...and I am so very sorry that you will expire in the state of ignorance you find yourself...having never known your god...or practiced it's principals.

ADH November 4, 2012 at 01:31 pm
The thing that bothers me most is that 99% of religious people can't accept others opinions. They are so brain washed into believing that their beliefs are the only possible way to live life. Get off your high horses! Your mind is like a parachute. It only functions when open....
MARIGOLD November 4, 2012 at 01:34 pm

sankar November 4, 2012 at 01:38 pm
If we have to pick a religion, we should pick the religion of the original inhabitants of what is USA today. It looks like they had the perfect life, no major disease, well tuned with the God given nature and all.
Then the religious people came, and gave them development. USA.

ADH: Amen!!! (pun intended) That is the best saying I've heard in a long time!
MARIGOLD November 4, 2012 at 02:41 pm
When this article was written I think it was written to inform everyone about a terrible tragedy that happened to this unfortunate family. Prior to this I have heard of another case similar a few days before this happened in Naperville. So many bad things going on in our world, because of some people, even though I think given the right circumstances we are all capable of such violence no matter how well rounded and how well balanced we say we are...Perfect example is right here on The Patch. Look how everyone is attacking one another on-line. I personally think its a shame and disgrace of which even I am guilty, following up on what idiots say to my comments. WE MUST ASK OURSELVES THIS! ARE WE BETTER THAN THAT WOMAN THAT ATTACKED THOSE CHILDREN?. PUT US ALL IN PERSON IN A ROOM WITH WEAPONS SAYING THE SAME FOUL DISRESPECTING THINGS TO ONE ANOTHER, WHAT DO ALL THINK WILL HAPPEN? MY POINT EXACTLY.The Constitution guarantees all freedom of speech, but not to attack one another calling foul names. My mother have always told me growing up, WHO KNOWS BETTER DO BETTER.YOU ALL CAN KEEP ATTACKING EACH OTHER, I AM TURNING OFF THE PATCH FOR NOW ON THIS ONE. IT'S SUNDAY I am going to Church to serve my God Jehovah, and ask for his protection for me and my family.I AM PUTTING ON THAT NO STICK ANOINTING AND LET THE NASTY COMMENTS SLIDE OFF ME SO I CAN KEEP GODS BLESSING ON ME AND MY FAMILY LIFE. LETS ALL PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE IN THIS ARTICLE.
Peace Out

Do as I say, not as I do?
Just Sayin November 4, 2012 at 08:59 pm
MARIGOLD...I can unequivocally say this... Yes...I am better than the woman who attacked those children. It's apparently you who can not be trusted in a room with weapons. I myself would leave the room and let the animals disguised as humans have at it. You are dark hearted and ignorant. Nothing you can do will wash that off of you.
Ashley November 4, 2012 at 11:40 pm
Just Sayin...It's nice to have a civil conversation with someone who is versed on policy, uses facts not fantasies and respect others regardless of their religion, Sadly, reading some post, we can see not everyone lives on plant earth.
Winnetka...please re-read my post because I believe we are arguing the same points. Marigold....Please STOP YELLING and name calling. I hope you don't pray with that same mouth. John Robinson....this is exactly what I am talking about. Your points are NOT facts but made up statements or twisted truths to justify hating. I could refute each one of your points with FACTUAL evidence and completely embarrass you, but that would take time that I don't want to spend educating you. Regardless, even if people like you were faced with the truth, you would make up another lie to deny it. Go ahead, believe your own fantasies. It only once again proves to me and others that attempting to engage in civil discourse with someone not versed in reality is all but impossible. May I suggest that in the future if you want to win an argument or even attempt to give the impression that you know what you are talking about, do some research. Try fact checking your claims before you boldly make a statement then can be completely squashed by a fifth grader. Maybe it's time that voters are required to take some type of test before they vote so the completely deranged ones can be weeded out. Obama not permitting silence in schools...bahahahahaha

Asking me if I would like help with my groceries to my car, is okay, but making it mandatory thatRead More you follow me to my car, oh NO. Regardless of why Jewel is doing this, it is wrong. It is as if we are suspects or criminals. It is an invasion of my privacy. I don't need you following me to my car & knowing what I have in it or what kind of car I have. Did anyone stop to think this is going to add to the stress of grocery shopping. The lines are long enough & it takes forever to check out. Now take away the baggers & let them follow all the customers & what do you have - longer lines, irate customers, having to possibly hire more help which is going to drive the prices at Jewel higher. Someone has to pay for this "service". So I say if you don't think this should be, then bombard Jewel with letters or don't shop at Jewel. I think they may get the message then.
Brian Hickey May 19, 2013 at 07:33 am
People still shop at Jewel?
