Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Community Fundraiser

When/Where: Friday, Sept. 21 to 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Hodges Park, 101 Courtland Ave. in Park Ridge.

Why Go: Funds collected support our local nonprofits and charities including Avenues to Independents, Have Dreams, Womens Centers and more.

Friday Night Live Club for Fourth and Fifth Graders

When/Where: Friday, Sept. 21, 6-9 p.m. at Park Ridge Park District Maine Park Leisure Center, 2701 W. Sibley St.

Why Go: Friday Night Live Club is a fun and safe club designed for students in fourth and fifth grade. Each month is themed and features a live DJ! Everyone is guaranteed to have a blast! Pre-register or pay at the door. Concessions including pizza, pop, water, candy and chips will be available.

Our Lady of Ransom Oktoberfest

When/Where: Friday, Sept. 21, 6:30 p.m., Our Lady of Ransom Church, 8300 N. Greenwood in Niles.

Why Go: Beer, brats, sides, an oompah band, and a drawing to win $25,000! Plus the good company of parishioners, who hail from Park Ridge, Des Plaines, Glenview and Niles.

Park Ridge Farmers' Market

When/Where: Saturday, Sept. 22, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prairie Avenue and Garden Street in Park Ridge.

Why Go: The Park Ridge Farmers' Market features fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, handmade soaps, flowers, potted plants and more.

Electric Competition and What Consumers Should Know

When/Where: Saturday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: The Citizen’s Utility Board will explain what electric competition is, what that means to the consumer and what are your options. In northern Illinois, you can choose Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), the regulated utility, to supply you with power, or go with alternative suppliers.

Beginner Chess Workshop

When/Where: Saturday, Sept. 22, 1-2 p.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Curious about chess or a brand new chess player? Learn how to play chess and meet other players during this workshop series presented by CheckMates Chess Academy. Registration is for all three sessions.

Pricing: Free. 

Maxwell Street Klezmer Band

When/Where: Sunday, Sept. 23, 2-3 p.m. at the Des Plaines Public Library, 1501 Ellinwood Ave. in Des Plaines.

Why Go: Enjoy a lively program of traditional klezmer music. The program will include clarinet and violin solos, vocals and entertaining commentary; all delivered with warmth and humor. The full eight-piece show band will perform. Registration requested.
