The 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign kicks off May 10 in Illinois. The purpose of the campaign is to help save lives by cracking down on those who do not buckle up through the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The Park Ridge Police Department is joining the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), the Illinois State Police (ISP) and more than 500 local law enforcement agencies across the state to save more lives by strongly enforcing seat belt laws, a press release from the department states. Provisional numbers show that during the 2012 Memorial Day weekend there were six fatalities and almost 600 injuries on Illinois roadways. Three of those fatalities were alcohol-related. Burglaries A home in the 400 block of Engel was burglarized May 1 around 2:40 p.m. Someone entered the unlocked home and removed a jewelry box with miscellaneous jewelry. Someone removed a saw from the rear of a 2012 Ford F-450 while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot in the 1000 block of N. Northwest Highway. Theft An unlocked desk drawer was opened at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, 1775 W. Dempster Street and several credit cards and a library card were removed from a purse. The incident happend April 22 between 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Someone removed a vented sewer cover from the parkway in the 900 block of S. Park Ridge Police officers from the Major Crash Unit completed their investigation into a motor vehicle crash which occurred on December 22, 2012. The crash occurred at 3:17 am near Cedar Street and Wisner Street. According to police, responding officers determined that a car had lost control and struck a tree in that area. Two passengers were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The major crash unit presented their findings to the Cook County State’s Attorney's Office, which approved charges against the driver, Colin P. Garvey, 19, of Park Ridge. As of Thursday evening, Des Plaines police did not have any suspects in custody in connection with a gas station robbery that occurred in the afternoon, according to police. Both Maine South High School and a daycare went on lockdown.
No suspects were in custody, as of Thursday evening, in connection with a reported gas station robbery that occurred in Des Plaines on Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for Des Plaines police confirmed. A suspect robbed a Shell gasoline station at Oakton Street and River Road in Des Plaines, then fled east into Park Ridge, said Park Ridge Police Commander Lou Jogmen. Maine South High School was placed on soft lockdown at 1:30 p.m. or 2 p.m., a spokesperson for the high school district stated. Police stated two Des Plaines men are under investigation for multiple residential burglaries.

Two Des Plaines men arrested after committing a residential burglary while under surveillance of law enforcement were charged with multiple counts of residential burglary, according to the Chicago Police Department. The overall crime rate decreased approximately 4 percent from 2011 to 2012, according to data presented to Park Ridge’s committee of the whole on Monday.
Park Ridge appears to have been a slightly safer place to live in 2012 than it was in 2011. The overall crime rate was four percent lower in 2012 compared to 2011, according to annual data Police Chief Frank Kaminski presented to the committee of the whole at a meeting on Monday. In an interview with Patch, Kaminski said he attributed the decline in crime to an increase in community involvement. “We’ve been trying to move to more of a community policing philosophy,” Kaminski said. In a memo about the crime statistics, Kaminski stated 2012 had the lowest crime rate in the past five years, and, according to the analysis, it also had the lowest accident rate in five years. Police are still investigating how many burglaries, they say, two men are responsible for committing in the area.
Two Des Plaines men will face burglary charges following a surveillance operation conducted by the Park Ridge Police Department, according to a statement from Des Plaines police on Friday. Mariusz Poplawski, 24, of Des Plaines, and Sebastian Dybala, 23, of Des Plaines, were arrested after police saw them rob a condo building, police stated. Poplawski and Dybala were put under surveillance, police stated, after being identified as active burglars on the Northwest side of Chicago and in the Northwest suburbs. Police followed Poplawski and Dybala to a condominium complex on the 8700 block of W. Homeowner Tricked In Burglary A male around 35 approached a woman in the 600 block of N. Dee Road as the she was taking out the garbage. The person told the her that he were related to neighbors and would be cleaning outside around the house. The individual led the victim into her house and told the victim he wanted to show her through her windows where he would be cleaning. The man gave the victim a phone number and left. The phone number was fake and the victim later noticed that jewelry was missing. The man was described as being about 35, hispanic, 5 feet seven inches tall, about 200 pounds, with a goatee and wearing sunglasses, a hat and a leather jacket. A convenience store in the 900 block of Northwest Highway was robbed Friday morning at gunpoint.
Park Ridge police are searching for a man who robbed a convenience store early Friday after brandishing a handgun. Police said the incident happened at 3:25 a.m. The suspect was described as a black male, five foot six inches tall with a thin build. The individual was wearing a black knit cap, black sweater and dark glasses. The man displayed a hand gun, told the cashier to give him all the money, and left on foot heading west on Oakton Street. The Park-Ridge Herald Advocate reported that the store was a 7-11 and that the individual stole about $200.

A 15-year-old girl faces charges after a fight between her and a 14-year-old girl ended up on YouTube, the Journal and Topics reported. The Dec. 5 altercation happened in a hallway at Maine South High School, the newspaper reported. Another student captured the incident on video and it was uploaded to YouTube, the Journal and Topics reported.
